About Larry

Larry BrownCommunity Leader. Husband. Father. Professional Athlete. Coach. Businessman. Councilman. These are all titles for which Larry Brown is known. For more than a decade he has watched out for the people of Las Vegas, making sure taxpayer dollars are accounted for and working to see that families are safe in their homes and neighborhoods. In addition to his job on the council, he has been an integral part of the community, serving on numerous charitable boards and supporting youth sports organizations.

Here are just a few of the highlights from Larry’s decade-long service to our community:

  • Fiscal Accountability
Larry Brown has been described by the Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper as a “fiscal hawk” on the Las Vegas City Council. He has set new standards for city departments to justify their spending, requiring them to account for every dollar and quantify how their services benefit the public. Since joining the City Council in 1997, he has fought for more public scrutiny of city budgets, required department heads to show justification before filling vacant positions, and helped weed out under-performing city contractors. Larry also tightened his own belt, as the only vote AGAINST pay hikes for council members.

  • Neighborhood Preservation
As a Councilman, Larry worked hard to pass a unified city/county master plan for the Northwest, and worked to eliminate “spot-zoning” that threatened the integrity of residential neighborhoods. It wasn’t an easy fight. Larry had to stand up to powerful county commissioners, including Erin Kenny, who tried to block the plan in favor of special interests and developers. But he prevailed, and the neighborhoods have seen the benefits of his efforts. Larry has also worked to require developers to provide neighborhood amenities including schools, parks and libraries.

  • Parks and Youth Sports
Perhaps one of Larry’s most lasting accomplishments is the numerous parks he has helped to create and the thousands of youth programs he has championed. Both the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex and the Kellog-Zaher Sports Complex came about through his efforts. He has been the driving force behind numerous other new parks and much needed renovations to existing parks and recreation areas. Larry was also instrumental in saving middle school athletic programs threatened by school district budget cuts, and he spearheaded an agreement to co-fund an athletic field with the school district, allowing Las Vegas residents use of the ball field when not in use by the school district. A former professional baseball player for the now Las Vegas 51's, Larry has had a life-long commitment to youth athletics. He has been a coach and sponsor of little league teams and is still active in baseball and soccer programs throughout Southern Nevada.

  • Committed to Public Safety
Larry has always had strong support and endorsements from law enforcement officials, and has worked to give them the tools they need to protect our families and neighborhoods. He strongly supported efforts by Las Vegas Metro Police Department to put more police officers on our streets and in our neighborhoods. He will continue to work closely with the Sheriff and other public safety officials to make sure the state’s current budget crisis does not affect Metro’s ability to provide service to Las Vegas residents.

  • Fighting Against Gridlock
As a member of the Regional Transportation Commission, Larry is working to relieve gridlock and rebuild and repave old roads for better traffic flow. A strong proponent of mass transportation alternatives, Larry will continue to push for control of transportation dollars at a local level. He strongly believes that Southern Nevadans should receive more tax dollars for major road projects that improve transportation.

  • A Strong Advocate for our Seniors
Throughout his time in public office, Larry has worked diligently on behalf of seniors and retirees. Aside from keeping taxes low so those living on fixed incomes can better manage their finances, he supported the construction of two senior centers. He has also sponsored measures to provide for more senior care centers in the city and has backed the creation of an affordable housing program.
